NEW: Age Approved By Teachers Filter for Android Apps

We’ve added a new filter to the 42matters Explorer! Now, you’ll be able to see which Android apps have been age approved by teachers.

Over the past few days, we’ve announced the addition of two new filters to the 42matters Explorer — iOS Content Advisories and Google Play Content Descriptors. Today, we’re pleased to announce that our development team has launched a third.

Indeed, our users will now be able to filter all Android apps available on Google Play that have been “Age Approved by Teachers.” We’ll dig into what this means in just a moment. But before we do, let’s take a brief look at what we’ll cover in this article:

With that, let’s get cracking!

What are Teacher Approved Apps?

Recently, Google added a “Kids” category to the Google Play digital marketplace, enabling parents and children to browse from a selection of age-appropriate apps and games. Included in the Kids category are a host of apps labeled “Teacher Approved.” These apps have been reviewed by teachers who work with Google to curate apps and score them based on a number of criteria, such as age-appropriateness, learning, and positive messages.

The Kids category is subdivided into nine different categories, including the following age-specific ones:

  • Ages up to 5
  • Ages 6-8
  • Ages 9-12

Why is it Useful to Know Which Apps Have Been Approved by Teachers?

There’s a number of benefits to having teachers certify Android apps and games. First and foremost, it’s a great way to help parents find quality digital content for their kids. Indeed, with coronavirus throwing a wrench into traditional schooling, it’s more important than ever to offer alternatives. Mobile apps are a great way to supplement learning in a fun and engaging manner.

Moreover, for developers, having teachers approve your apps and games is a great way to boost audience trust. Similar to Google’s content descriptors, teacher approval creates a degree of transparency that helps parents avoid potentially objectionable content or content that’s simply too advanced for their children. In turn, this has a positive impact on in-app experience, ratings, and reviews.

Finally, by noting which apps have been approved by teachers for certain age groups, advertisers will be better able to reach their target audiences. Of course, this means giving companies that create products for kids the ability to serve ads on these apps. But it also works the other way. By excluding apps approved by teachers from serving their ads, companies that aim for more mature audiences can avoid spending ad dollars on the wrong things. It’s also worth mentioning that very few 5-year-olds own their own smartphones; so there’s a good chance they’re using their parents' devices to access these apps. With this in mind, advertisers can use teacher approved apps to advertise products to parents as well.
