With Black Friday, Cyber Monday, and Black Week just around the corner, we decided to look at the most popular “Buy Now, Pay Later” (BNPL) apps in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland (DACH).
Here’s what we found (click the links to jump to the relevant sections):
Klarna Surpassed 10,000,000 Downloads in DACH in 2022
Check it out, here are the daily downloads for the iOS (red) and Android (purple) versions of Klarna between January 1st and November 22nd, 2022. In this case, we’ve broken it up by country:
Germany
Austria
Switzerland
As you can see, Germany is the prime mover and shaker here, accounting for approximately 85% of Klarna’s 2022 downloads in the DACH region.
More concretely, German users downloaded Klarna 8,903,824 times, while Austrian users downloaded the app 1,073,086 times, and Swiss users downloaded it 509,906 times. All told, the DACH region accounted for 10,486,816 of Klarna’s 31,692,544 global downloads in 2022.
Riverty Is Rising in Germany
Next up, let’s look at Riverty. Formerly known as AfterPay, Riverty has established itself as a strong presence in the German BNPL space. The chart above depicts daily downloads in 2022, year-to-date. Pink represents iOS downloads, while blue represents Android downloads.
As you can see, the app has been downloaded 93,788 times in Germany alone. While it has yet to be released in the rest of the DACH region, Riverty has registered 814,244 downloads globally. As such, German users represent approximately 11.5% of the app’s total downloads. So, presumably, a rest-of-DACH roll-out wouldn’t be a bad idea.
Final Thoughts
The DACH BNPL space has a long way to go. Klarna still dominates the market and competitors are few and far between. Indeed, major global players like Sezzle, Affirm, and Zip are almost nowhere to be found.
In any event, with Black Friday and Cyber Monday just around the corner, we’ll be keeping an eye on the numbers. Perhaps Riverty can gain some ground on Klarna…
