A few weeks ago, we wrote about declining downloads for fast grocery apps in the United States. We noted that, as global markets have become less stable, so too have start-ups like JOKR, Gopuff, getir, and Gorillas. Businesses that recently raised upwards of $5.5 Billion from venture capitalists are now engaging in serious cost-cutting measures, including layoffs, warehouse closures, etc.
However, it’s not all doom and gloom. In India, for example, grocery delivery apps appear to be thriving. Some have even managed to generate upwards of one million downloads per month in the subcontinent alone.
So, with this in mind, we decided to take a look at the most popular mobile grocery delivery offerings in India. We analyzed the performance of Swiggy Food & Grocery Delivery, Zepto: 10-Min Grocery Delivery, Dunzo: Grocery Shopping & More, and bigbasket: Grocery Shopping. Here’s what we found.

In total, these apps have been downloaded 5,896,229 times in India in the period charted.
- Zepto leads the way with 2,267,885 downloads so far in 2022.
- Dunzo has 1,627,906 downloads.
- Swiggy has 1,067,241 downloads.

Android downloads are even stronger…
Now let’s look at the Android numbers. Above you’ll find daily Indian downloads for the Android versions of Swiggy, Zepto, Dunzo, and bigbasket. Again, these are downloads from the period between January 1st and July 5th, 2022.
In total, these apps have been downloaded 23,327,102 times in India thus far in 2022.
- Swiggy leads the way with 7,570,098 downloads so far in 2022.
- Zepto has 7,387,267 downloads.
- bigbasket has 4,218,999 downloads.
- Dunzo has 4,195,738 downloads.
Final Thoughts
In our article outlining the struggles of U.S. grocery delivery apps, we noted that what appeared to be happening was less about market uncertainty and more about good old fashioned consolidation. Fast grocery apps are not only incredibly convenient for consumers, they’re also an easy business model to replicate. So, unsurprisingly, the U.S. market had become pretty crowded and was due for realignment.
By contrast, the Indian market is currently dominated by Swiggy, Zepto, Dunzo, and bigbasket; but, there are plenty of downloads to go around. This is an enticing notion for entrepreneurs since it indicates there’s a good opportunity to cut off a piece of the pie. So, keep an eye on this space, one or two new contenders could shake things up in a big way.
