Digital Health Trends 2021 by IQVIA Institute

In a recent report, the IQVIA Institute for Human Data Science analyzed numerous digital health trends in 2021, including the rise of mobile health apps. Here’s how they used 42matters to do so...

A few weeks ago, the folks over at the IQVIA Institute for Human Data Science, an American company operating in the health information technology and clinical research industries, released a report titled Digital Health Trends 2021: Innovation, evidence, regulation, and adoption.

In their report, IQVIA analyzed a host of trends in the digital health space, such as the rise of wearable sensors, digital therapeutics, and — relevant to 42matters — mobile health apps. These technologies have the potential to revolutionize everything from patient care to clinical trial design and, as the report notes, have become an “entirely new therapeutic modality alongside traditional medicines and medical devices.”

How IQVIA Leveraged Data from 42matters

For Mobile App and Patient Health App Analysis:

To conduct their analysis of global health app trends, IQVIA sourced much of their information from 42matters. Their data, which was pulled in June 2021, reflected a total 351,308 health apps from both Google Play (177,326 apps) and the Apple App Store (173,982 apps).

In addition, IQVIA used our tools to access data on patient health apps. Using data from June 10th, 2021, they narrowed their focus to 11,543 unique healthcare consumer mobile apps, including apps in the “Health & Fitness” and “Medical” categories. To determine which apps were most widely used by consumers, IQVIA sorted these apps according to downloads.

For COVID-19 Download Trends Analysis:

IQVIA also used our data to map the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on app use. For this, they relied on install data from the aforementioned “Health & Fitness” and “Medical” categories of Google Play.

In the report, IQVIA cites the example of suicide apps. Using filters provided by our app intelligence solutions, they were able to find all apps that had the word suicide in the developer name, app title, or app description, and exclude those with fewer than 5,000 total downloads or fewer than 100 monthly downloads. This query yielded results for numerous apps, including Moodtools – Depression Aid; Don’t Panic – Depression and panic help; Stay Alive; Beyond Now suicide safety plan; and more.

They also ran similar reports for exercise, depression / anxiety, oximetry, and blood pressure apps. In these cases, they used the same filters to identify apps that used specific keywords in their titles or descriptions, and to weed out apps that failed to meet certain thresholds for total and monthly downloads.

Finally, IQVIA tracked the performance of other apps commonly used for telemedicine. Among these were ZOOM Cloud Meetings, Zoom for Intune, Microsoft Teams, and Domixity — Medical Network.
